Tackling Radicalism through Active Citizenship of Europe in Schools (trACES)

On Monday (15 October 2018) we conducted a lecture for pupils of class 3.E (2 hours) and 3.D (3 hours) on topic of radicalization, (youth) political participation and media literacy at High School Šolski center Celje, Gimnazija Lava.

The lecturer Miha Zimšek addressed the phenomenon of radicalization that leads to violent extremism in modern plural societies. Through presentation of examples, students learned that radicalization is not a new phenomenon, but in modern forms it appears in a qualitatively different appearance, which is largely due to technological progress. The emphasis was on the radicalization as multi-faceted phenomenon, where the lecturer described the causes of radicalization as well as the complexity of the entire process of radicalization. Students were acquainted with the definitions of differences between radicalization, extremism and terrorism.

The class 3.E then had a brief lecture on (youth) political participation. Pupils discussed what political participation is, about the forms of (political) participation and youth political participation.

On the other hand, the class 3.D (s)elected a lecture on Media: control over political authority and the availability of information. Before the lecturer introduced the media as the fourth branch of power to the pupils, he acquainted them with the separation of power into three branches. He then explained separation of power in Slovenia and in the European Union, and continued with development, tasks, functions and the role of the media. In the last part of the lecture, he focused on the phenomenon of "fake news" and the (youth) media literacy.
